Democratic Crofting

Elections have been held for the new reformed crofting commission in Scotland. We give our best wishes to the new elected representatives who have a job on their hands.

Travelling around Scotland a peculiar and repeated scene is of abandoned cottages. They make great images but they also would make a great life for people who love the land and would endure the hard work to live there. There are almost 2,000 absentee crofters and an unknown number of neglected crofts out of the 18,000 across the Highlands and Islands.

We have a gallery of images of abandoned crofts and cottages. There are more to come because this is an issue that fascinates us and one we would dearly love to see movement in.

If you have some interesting pictures and locations of abandoned crofts we would be welcome hearing from you.
