I asked in a recent post what the best road in Scotland might be. We are looking for a list here. So here are a few more suggestions.
The top in a range of other blog posts I read is the one I would put top – the A82 from Tyndrum to Glencoe village. It takes you through Rannoch Moor past the Buachaille mountain, which marks the entrance to the Glencoe Pass.
The ten-mile stretch of the A817 from Loch Lomond to Garelochhead, which rises up through Glen Fruin, was voted top in Scotland in a poll of motorists to find Britain’s best drives. It eclipsed the A87 between Invergarry and Skye which has previously been voted the best stretch of road north of the Border.
The next favourite of mine is Tarbert to Leverburgh on the Isle of Harris, which you will see plenty of on this blog.
A friend, Donnie McCauley, posted on the post that his favourite was the “North Road” from near Lochinver up over the mountains to Durness. “Fab road for the motorbike” says Donnie.
So here is the top five so far:
- A82 from Tyndrum through Rannoch Moor and Glencoe to Ballachhulish
- A817 from Loch Lomond to Garelochhead
- A87 between Invergarry and Skye which has previously been voted the best stretch of road north of the Border
- Tarbert to Leverburgh on the Isle of Harris
- the “North Road” from near Lochinver up over the mountains to Durness
A plan is to get some of the best images from each of the roads to feature in the next installment of the best roads in Scotland. Any contributions welcome.
